Vaginismus Treatment
What is vaginismus?
Vaginismus is an automatic or involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor muscles with any attempt at penetration. Vaginismus can make penetration for tampon use, gynecological exams or sexual intercourse impossible.
With vaginismus, tightness in the pelvic floor muscles progresses to pain and then results in increased fear of pain during any penetration.
Vaginismus is often driven by multiple factors including emotional stress, mental stress, nutritional deficiencies and/or hormonal imbalances and therefore a multidisciplinary with different disciplines is most beneficial.
Pelvic floor therapy for vaginismus.
Pelvic floor therapy aims to address pelvic floor muscle tension and tightness that is leading to pain and fear of penetration. Your therapist can help start by relaxing the pelvic floor muscles externally and progress to internal pelvic floor muscle treatments as symptoms improve.
Pelvic floor therapists provide hand-on manual treatments, individualized exercises and discuss lifestyle modifications in order to help your body and mind break the cycle of associating penetration with pain.
